Overview
This intricate black-and-white drawing captures a layered view of San Francisco’s urban landscape, centered on the historic Ghirardelli complex set against the city’s rolling hills and skyline. The elevated perspective reveals rooftops, brick facades, and dense city textures, drawing the viewer into the rhythm of the city from above. The bold “Ghirardelli” sign anchors the composition, while the surrounding buildings and distant structures create a strong sense of depth and place.
Drawing Process
Created entirely with pen and ink, this piece relies on dense cross-hatching and fine line work to build form, shadow, and atmosphere. Each section of the drawing was carefully developed through repeated, deliberate marks, allowing light and dark areas to emerge naturally. The permanence of ink demanded precision and patience, especially in the architectural details and layered rooftops, resulting in a richly textured surface that reflects many hours of focused work.
History / More Info
Ghirardelli Square is one of San Francisco’s most recognizable historic sites, originally serving as a chocolate factory and later transformed into a landmark public space. This drawing references that industrial heritage while also highlighting the surrounding neighborhood and the city’s characteristic hills. By blending historic architecture with a broader city backdrop, the piece pays tribute to San Francisco’s past and present, preserving a familiar yet evolving scene through a timeless, hand-drawn approach.
Personal Connection
Ghirardelli Square is a very popular tourist destination, but to me it was just a regular place. My Mom used to take my sister and me to a kids club to hangout with out friends 4-5 times a week. When I got older, we would go there for treats and then explore every nook and cranny around the area.
